LG Display has set out to establish a production line for plastic organic light-emitting diode (POLED) panels.

On July 6, LG Display, a leading global panel maker based in South Korea, held a ceremony to commemorate the installment of the first production equipment for the 6th POLED panels at the E5 factory in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea.

The company has been putting efforts to build a production line for POLED with a total of 1. 5 trillion won (US$1.3 billion) investment, combining 1.05 trillion won (US$913 million) in July last year and 450 billion won (US$391 million) in April this year. Following those efforts, it plans to start the mass-production in the first half of next year after going through the processes such as installment of POLED core equipment, establishment of a production-line, and then trial operation.

LG Display’s 1.5 trillion won investment in the POLED facilities in Gumi is expected to have economic effects like job creations on the local community suffering from economic slump.

The plastic OLED or POLED is a technology that can realize the advantages of the future displays that are bendable, rollable, and foldable.
