South Korean government is planning to establish a national data hub along with launching big data projects in H2 of this year to accelerate the utilization of big data.

 

The Ministry of Strategy & Finance announced on July 5 that a national data hub will be established in the second half of next year based on the National Information Society Agency’s Open Data Portal and Big Data Center.

The national data hub is to search for data in fields such as medical, legal and patent and provide it after processing facilitating artificial intelligence-based analysis. In addition, it is to create data maps regarding public and private data and provide the maps for enterprises utilizing data.

In the meantime, the South Korean government is planning to launch big data projects in the second half of this year so as to accelerate the utilization of big data. In the projects, the government is going to assist in business model exploration and commercialization based on big data utilization in the sectors including medical, digital content, media, finance and freight logistics.

At the same time, the government came up with software service industry development plans on July 5. According to the plans, private investment in the Internet of Things, cloud computing, big data and mobile communications is to be encouraged. And the major IT service providers affiliated with large corporations are allowed to participate in more projects for e-government system export on their own or together with smaller firms.

Also, performance assessments are to be conducted with regard to public agencies’ private cloud computing service utilization for the promotion of the cloud computing industry before such assessments are expanded to cover local governments. Information and data resources are to be classified into several tiers and then the use of private cloud computing services are to be allowed for certain tiers of resources.
