Korean researchers have succeeded in developing a key technology of 5G mobile communications, which enables communications in 0.002 seconds (2ms), by shortening delay time of mobile communications which takes more than 0.02 (20ms) in 4G mobile communications by one tenth.

It is faster up to 25 times than the recognition time of 50ms or so, at which humans perceive things through sight and hearing.

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has announced on June 30 that it has succeeded in verifying 5G low latency mobile communications technology that reduces service latency to around 2ms, through tests using an inverted pendulum with related companies including SK Telecom.

Service latency in mobile communications refers to the time that it takes for signals coming from communicating devices like smartphones to return to them through base stations and servers. Communications needs to respond fast because devices need to be operated quickly according to momentarily changing conditions in preparation for 5G new services including self-driving vehicles and telemedicine. That is why super low latency is a key technology of 5G.

In addition, the technology is expected to be useful to many high-tech services including smart factories, drone control, real-time robot precision control, and augmented reality.
