LG U+ announced on June 15 that it would release a new service in August that facilitates user authentication for mobile shopping, banking transactions and the like based on the storage of personal biometric information in universal subscriber identity modules (USIMs).

To this end, the mobile carrier recently obtained the Fast Identity Online (FIDO) certification, which is an international standard regarding biometric authentication. It is planning to provide USIMs with a high level of security in compliance with the certification and make use of the USIMs in setting up a FIDO authentication platform requiring no additional infrastructure.

The platform is to be used for combination of users’ biometric information, such as fingerprint data and iris data, with the mobile carrier’s subscriber and billing information so that one-stop authentication can become possible. In other words, the platform can remove the hassle of secondary user authentication and repeated authentication procedures for different banking, IoT services and so on.

At the same time, LG U+ is planning to open a joint platform in August with SK Telecom and KT so universal FIDO authentication solutions and services can be provided for the convenience of enterprises and organizations wishing to use them.
