CJ CheilJedang Corp. announced that its yogurt power product recently received Halal certifications from the Malaysian Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM) through the Korea Muslim Federation in order to expand the export of “METIER” to Southeast Asia.

METIER, the brand under CJ, developed the yogurt powder product targeting the Southeast Asian market from the stage of product development by winning Halal certifications. It excluded all main and sub ingredients, including spices, which Muslims are not allowed to eat.

To receive Halal certifications, a company is required not to use ingredients that Muslims are prohibited from consuming even when manufacturing other products in the same facility. So, CJ CheilJedang changed some production lines at its Incheon No.1 Plant, which produces coffee and cafe materials, to halal production lines. Moreover, the company excluded all ingredients which Muslims should not eat, including pork and alcohol, and replaced them with other ingredients to manufacture other products at the facility. CJ CheilJedang went through such stringent procedures and received KMF Halal certifications for the product, which can be now exported to Malaysia, at the end of last month. In addition, it is about to win MUI Halal certifications from the Indonesian government.

CJ CheilJedang will export yogurt powder products to seven countries in Southeast Asia, such as Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand, this year and ship the first batch of 200 tons by early July. The product will be used as the base to produce yogurt drinks at local coffee shops.
