LG Chem announced on June 13 that it has won an order to supply reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment filters exclusively to the seawater desalination plant that Oman's Sohar Seawater Reverse Osmosis (Sohar SWRO) is building in the Sohar region by 2017. For the Sohar SWRO, Spain’s Valoriza Agua S.A., a global leading seawater desalination plant company, is participating as a major stakeholder.

Under the deal, LG Chem will ship over 20,000 units of RO filters for the desalination plant, which is equivalent to furnishing 250,000 tons of fresh water for about 800,000 people on daily basis, until the end of next year.

Last year, the company succeeded in improving RO functions up to 30 percent compared to conventional water treatment methods by applying macromolecule synthesis technology and nanocomposite response technology, and in filtering out salts by 99.85 percent, the best in the industry.

Moreover, it has developed its own manufacturing technology for industrial water treatment and residential water filters and held several patents, securing the best competitiveness in the sector.

LG Chem has invested about 40 billion won (US$34.07 million) in building the second production line at the plant in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province. The company plans to triple its water treatment filter output by operating the line by the end of this year.

In addition, it will actively boost its global sales of industrial water treatment, desalination and residential water treatment products by expanding its current international distribution channels in 12 countries, including the Middle East and Europe, to 17 countries in the future.
