LS Industrial Systems (LSIS) announced on June 9 that its in-house portable chargers to be used in electric vehicles (EVs) won the ISO 26262 ASIL B standard for automotive functional safety. TUV Rheinland is a provider of expert functional safety certification services – ASIL.

The company held the ceremony to receive the ISO 26262 standard at its R&D campus in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province, along with TUV Rheinland Korea. ISO 26262 is an international standard which defines functional safety for automotive equipment and addresses possible hazards caused by the malfunctioning of electronic and electrical systems in passenger vehicles.

With portable chargers, EV drivers can recharge their vehicles without visiting charging stations. Automakers have to include portable chargers in eco-friendly vehicles like plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and EVs. Currently, Delphi, Panasonic and Delta are the leaders in the global market for portable EV rechargers.

After LSIS signed an agreement with Daimler Group in 2013 to supply its portable EV chargers, it has developed 28 such models compatible with five eco-friendly vehicles. The company is also pushing to acquire the certification in 61 countries in where the models will be sold.

Daimler Group has required LSIS to obtain the certification in 61 countries. LSIS’ portable EV charger has been authorized in more than 50 countries up to now. The company will start mass producing the portable chargers as soon as it receives the certification in the remaining countries.
