It has been found that Germany won the largest number of shipbuilding contracts in the world last month, followed by Rumania, Vietnam, China and Japan. Last month, a total of 38 orders equivalent to 1.06 million CGT were placed. During the first five months of this year, the number was 157 equivalent to 4.98 million CGT, about one-third of that recorded between January and May last year.

Last month, German shipbuilders won eight contracts (590,000 CGT), most of which are to build cruise ships and car ferries. Rumanian and Vietnamese companies obtained nine (140,000 CGT) and six (90,000 CGT), respectively. The 15 cargo ship orders were placed by Topaz Energy, a UAE company.

Orders for four 2,500 TEU container ships (80,300 CGT) went to Chinese shipbuilders and those for two container ships and two LPG carriers (77,000 CGT) went to Japanese companies. When it comes to their South Korean counterparts, the top three, that is, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, failed to clinch any contract whereas Hyundai Mipo Dockyard signed those for two chemical product carriers of 40,000 DWT and Dae Sun Shipbuilding & Engineering clinched two deals for the same type of ships of 6,500 DWT. Samsung Heavy Industries’ zero performance continued for the second consecutive month.

Between January and May this year, Chinese shipbuilders won 63 contracts (two million CGT) in total, 80% of which were domestic contracts. They were followed by European shipbuilders that own shipbuilding facilities for cruise ships. Japanese and South Korean companies ranked fifth and sixth, respectively.
