An invisible building will be constructed in the international business district in Cheongna, Incheon City.

According to Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH) on September 16, LH is pushing forward with an architectural plan for Tower Infinity, after obtaining a construction permit from Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority in August. The plan is to make the building invisible from certain angles, aided by cameras and projection screens designed to conceal the tower.

LED projectors are used in this technology. Cameras capture real-time images of the surroundings directly behind the building. The mostly sky images are then reflected in real time on its surface covered with glass, through LED projectors installed all over the building. The reflective surface enables the tower to blend in with the skyline, thereby giving the impression that the building does not exist at all.

At 1,476 feet tall, the glass tower will become the sixth tallest building in the world. In particular, its observation deck will be the third highest. The building will be filled with stores, restaurants, a movie theater, and a water park.

A LH official said, “Samoo Architects is in charge of the project. GDS Architects and A&U Design Group are involved in its design. In 2007, the design concept was presented by GDS Architects in International Idea Competition for Cheongna CITY TOWER Design in Incheon,” adding, “Neither a starting date nor a completion date has been decided yet, since the tower’s architectural planning is still in progress.”

High-tech camouflage: From left to right, a look at how the building will appear when the LED facade system is deactivated, then lit with 30% power, finally, on the far right, 100% power.

American business magazine Forbes and CNN also reported on September 15 (local time) that US-based GDS Architects got approval to construct Tower Infinity near the Incheon International Airport.

The two media outlets said that its height is not the main point. The point is that it can be transformed into the world's first invisible building.

According to CNN, GDS Architects is not revealing the completion date. But Forbes reported that the tower is expected to be finished next year.
