Ranking in Global Steel Industry

According to the World Steel Association, POSCO ranked fourth in the world last year in terms of crude steel production by recording an output of 41.97 million tons.

POSCO had ranked fourth in 2011 but remained at the fifth place for the following three years. Although its crude steel production volume edged up from 41.59 million tons to 41.97 million tons between 2014 and 2015, that of Baosteel, which took the fourth place in 2014, dropped last year to cause a change in the rankings. Baosteel’s crude steel production fell from 43.35 million tons to 34.94 million tons between the two years.

In the meantime, Hyundai Steel ranked 13th with 20.48 million tons. ArcelorMittal is on the top of the list with 97.14 million tons, followed by Hebei Iron and Steel (47.75 million tons) and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal (46.37 million tons).

The global total crude steel production reached 1.621 billion tons last year, down 2.9% from a year ago. China’s volume amounted to 803.8 million tons, slightly less than the 822.8 million tons recorded in the preceding year. China was followed by Japan (105.2 million tons) and India (89.4 million tons). South Korea fell one notch to sixth with the amount declining from 71.5 million tons to 69.7 million tons.
