LS Cable & System Ltd. (LS C&S), South Korea’s leading cable manufacturer, announced on May 31 that it has developed a high-performance marine cable that can withstand extreme cold of minus 70 degrees Celsius for the first time in the world and acquired quality certification for the new cable from the Canadian Standards Association (CSA).

The new cable needs to be able to stably supply electricity and resist cracking and bending under shock even amid extremely low temperatures as low as minus 70 degrees Celsius because they are mainly used for icebreakers and offshore drilling facilities operating in the polar areas to deliver communication signals and electricity. So far, the best cables available in the market have been domestic products that can survive temperatures as cold as minus 65 degrees Celsius.

Demand for cables that can survive in extreme weather conditions is on the steady rise as global warming and oil drilling development has prompted active polar explorations and resource developments in the regions. The requirement level for the technology is also increasing.

LS Cable & System Chief Technology Officer Kim Dong-wook said, “LS Cable & System has accumulated references by developing the cold-resistant cable that can endure minus 50 degrees Celsius more than a decade ago and supplying it to old refineries in the Sakhalin region of Russia. Despite the slowdown in the shipbuilding and maritime industries, we expect to see an increase in demand for the cold-resistant cable as multiple development projects in the polar regions are under way.”

LS Cable & System seeks to expand sales by developing not only its anchor products such as extra-high-voltage and submarine cables but also ones used for eco-friendly, railway, mine and construction equipment.

The CSA is an international standardization body in North America, just like UL in the U.S. The certification mark issued by the CSA proves that the product has passed the association's qualification testing for stability and performance, and billions of products worldwide carry CSA certification marks.
