The Korea Exchange and the Japan Exchange Group had a meeting in South Korea from May 13 to 14 and discussed the development of a common stock price index. They are planning to form a working-level task force next month to discuss specific details with regard to the launching of the common index scheduled for next year.

The development of the common index with Japan forms a part of the Korea Exchange’s joint projects with Asian stock exchanges.

Late last year, Korea Exchange chairman Choi Kyung-soo said that he would come up with a stock price index representative of Asia with the other Asian stock exchanges and launch exchange traded products (ETPs) based on it. To this end, the Korea Exchange signed a business agreement for cross ETF listing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange last year and had a conference with the Shenzhen Stock Exchange early this year. The cross ETF listing with Taiwan is scheduled for the second half of this year.

The Korea Exchange is cooperating with global stock exchanges in a variety of fields not limited to ETF. For example, the EURO STOXX 50 Futures index was recently listed on the South Korean stock market for the first time out of the Eurex. In addition, the Korea Exchange is participating in the Philippines’, Malaysia’s and Thailand’s projects for stock exchange advancement.
