China Mobile, China’s largest wireless carrier which owns 80 million IoT connections, is seeking to connect its IoT network platform with KT Corp.

Thus, Korean small communication solution businesses are expected to have more chances to push into the Chinese IoT market, which will be connected with 10 billion devices by 2020.

Also, KT and China Mobile plan to share the IoT platform with other mobile carriers in Japan, Germany and the U.K., attracting attention.

Wang Tao, general manager at CM IoT, China Mobile’s subsidiary in the IoT sector, said on May 10, “We are planning to connect China Mobile’s OneNet IoT platform with KT’s IoT Makers Platform.”

China Mobile is currently connecting some IoT platform technologies with KT based on OneM2M, an international standard for the IoT. His remarks suggest that it will expand the project further.

KT expects that domestic IoT firms, which are supported by the company through the Gyeonggi Center for Creative Economy and Innovation, will be able to actively push into global markets with the connection of the IoT platforms.

China Mobile is the largest mobile carrier in China and the world with 830 million mobile phone subscribers. The company increased its number of IoT connections to 80 million, about 10 percent of the total connections owned by all mobile carriers, in just one year after starting the IoT business, showing a rapid growth in the IoT market. It also increased the number of base stations to 2.3 million.

With a huge number of subscribers, particularly, China Mobile also plans to expand its influence in the market by connecting the IoT standard platform with other numerous mobile carriers around the world, including Germany, the U.K., and the U.S. as well as Japan’s NTT Docomo.

The company currently offers a trial service which transmits images of logistics centers in China to Japan’s IoT network in real time, along with Japan’s logistics firm Sysmex Corporation.
