Cyber attacks become highly developed with intelligent techniques and more frequent, threatening not only industries but also national security. Accordingly, Korea and the U.S. are joining hands to develop cyber security technology using artificial intelligence (AI).

Considering the fact that large cyber attacks occur in real time these days, it is hard to deal with every single of them by human effort alone. This is why the two countries are planning to prevent evolving cyber attacks with AI technology.

The Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning issued a joint statement on May 2 with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to jointly carry out the future research and development in the cyber security sector by using intelligent information technology. As the two countries need to develop advanced machine learning algorithms and secure a wide variety of data, the U.S., which has the world’s best technology, and Korea, which has experience and expertise in cyber attack response, aim to develop global leading technologies through the partnership.

Both countries will raise US$1 million (1.1 billion won) each annually for the R&D and researchers from the two countries will cooperate to develop the latest technologies that detect, analyze and prevent threats in the cyber space by using AI which is recently attracting attention. The two countries will come up with detailed plans later after the negotiation. They also in talks to decide the joint development period from one to two years in short term to three to five years in long term. In addition, the two countries has agreed to share information on cyber threats and provide the chance of public and private cooperation.

Second Vice-minister of Science, ICT and Future Planning Choi Jae-yoo said, “The latest agreement is meaningful in that Korea will secure the global competitiveness through the cooperation with the U.S. which has the world’s best technology. We are planning to improve the ability to deal with cyber threats by preemptively responding to changes in the future technology paradigms, including the advances in AI, and help Korean companies break into global markets.” The two countries talked about plans to expand the cooperation in the cyber security sector during two “Korea-the U.S. Information Communication Technology Policy Forum” and Choi’s visit to the U.S. in March. The recent the visit to Korea of Reginald Brothers, under secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, led to the concrete partnership between Korea and the U.S.
