South Korean mobile carriers are in a fierce competition to take the lead in the virtual reality (VR) market. They are predicting that VR will generate a huge amount of data traffic instead of serving only as an entertainment.

On April 20, SK Telecom held a developer forum in Seoul and unveiled its new VR platform and brand T Real. The T Real brand is to be attached to every VR service of SK Telecom and the company is planning to provide various types of software development tools and end user content via the brand. In addition, the T Real platform is to be employed for different services combined with augmented reality.

KT, in the meantime, is looking to add content such as VR music videos to its music streaming service Gini. Furthermore, KT is making use of VR for its baseball broadcasting while expanding VR content in its real-time mobile Olleh TV for smartphone users.

LG U+ is beefing up its VR content in cooperation with smaller developers and content providers. The company is to provide VR-based mobile game promos via its LTE Video Portal service. All the three mobile carriers are expecting that the popularization of VR will be further accelerated once 5G telephony enables real-time 8K video transmission.
