Hyundai Motor Company opted for the strategy of global partnership in developing future cars such as connected cars. This is quite contrary to its own move in the green car sector. At present, the automaker is working on hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and hybrid cars on its own.

Hyundai Motor Company is planning to cooperate with Cisco Systems for connected car development. In addition, the automaker is expected to hold hands with more IT companies in developing smart cars. Hyundai explained that its partnership with Cisco Systems is for open innovation-based collaborations with global IT industry leaders.

Cases of collaborations between automakers and IT companies abound. Ford is working with Amazon, Volkswagen with LG Electronics, Volvo and Renault Nissan with Microsoft and BMW with Samsung Electronics. The partnership of Hyundai and Cisco is rather unique in that most of the other IT companies currently working with carmakers are focusing on in-vehicle infotainment systems and software but Cisco is specialized in network equipment and smart car security.

Hyundai Motor Company is planning on cooperation with different consumer electronics manufacturers and IT firms in the fields including smart home and smart office as well. With many global industry leaders interested in cooperation with Hyundai, its connected car development and cooperation with global IT industry leaders are expected to be accelerated.

Hyundai Motor Company has been working with Google and Apple and applied Android Auto and CarPlay to its vehicles. For example, the Hyundai Sonata became the world’s first Android Auto car last year in the U.S. market. In addition, it developed the Blue Link telematics service OS with Microsoft from 2008.
