As TV manufacturers have releasing TVs with high dynamic range (HDR) technology, which maximizes the three dimensional effect, SK Broadband has developed an encoder and set-top box that support the technology.

The company announced on Apr. 19 that it has developed the encoding technology, which can transmit the HDR content to Internet Protocol television (IPTV), and set-top box for the first time in the nation and succeeded in test transmission on the commercial network.

HDR is a technique that makes dark areas darker and bright areas brighter after analyzing the brightness on the screen. With better three dimensional effects and detailed description, it realizes images which make you think you are actually seeing it.

In order for viewers to watch HDR content via paid broadcasting services, they need the content filmed in HDR technology, encoding technology that can transmit the content, set-top box that supports HDR content and HDR TV.

The new HDR encoder and set-top box, which were jointly developed by SK Broadband and SK Telecom, allows subscribers to watch HDR content through set-top box by transmitting the content to the IPTV network in real time.

Meanwhile, the HDR technology is emerging as a new talk of the town in the image industry. TV makers are using the HDR technology in Ultra HD TVs and global content producers, such as 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros. and Disney, are also producing HDR contents. Moreover, platform operators, including Netflix, YouTube and Amazon, are actively securing HDR contents.

In addition, TV producers has been selling HDR TVs in earnest starting early this year. SK Broadband is planning to commercialize the set-top box after HDR TVs have come into wide use and a lot of HDR contents are produced.
