TmaxSoft is planning to release the Tmax OS, a PC operating system, in South Korea on April 20 and abroad within this year. The Tmax OS is characterized by high levels of security and compatibility. It protects data from various hacking attempts while being compatible with MS Windows and Linux programs.

Hancom, in the meantime, is trying to compete with Microsoft with its office programs. Its latest product Hancom Neo is highly compatible with MS Word files and comes with an automatic document translation feature as well.

According to the Korea Internet & Security Agency, Microsoft Windows accounts for no less than 97% of the South Korean OS market and approximately 92% of the global office market. “In Latin America, China and Russia, a number of users have an anti-MS sentiment and many of them have asked South Korean software companies to provide alternatives to MS programs,” said a local industry expert, adding, “This means South Korean software developers have a chance there if they can supply high-quality products.”

Hancom Group chairman Kim Sang-chul started the development of office programs targeting the global market in 2012. At that time, he said that Hancom’s share in the market would be increased from 0.4% to 5% within years. TmaxSoft chairman Park Dae-yeon as well as the Hancom Group chairman is trying to come up with various new business models combining their products with their cloud computing services and the like.
