The Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning held a meeting on April 8 and announced that it would nurture 100 global firms in the field of software as a service (SaaS) by 2018 in order to boost the growth of the cloud computing sector.

At the meeting, participants asked the South Korean government to focus more on the enrichment of the domestic cloud computing ecosystem.

“We are in need of business models in which large corporations, smaller companies and various SaaS service providers can work with one another for successful business abroad,” said SK C&C managing director Shin Hyun-suk. Cloud4u ECO Kim Ki-hyun echoed by saying, “The South Korean government’s long-term assistance is required for small firms’ SaaS development and market access, which take a long period of time and a large amount of investment in most cases.”

The ministry also announced during the meeting that it would collect ideas from April 11 with regard to the establishment of an Internet of Things (IoT) convergence complex. The purpose of the project is to come up with and put into practice IoT services that can deal with different types of city-related problems, such as traffic congestion and urban security, by means of cooperation between local governments and firms in the private sector.
