The Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning, the Ministry of Government Administration & Home Affairs and the Public Procurement Service opened the Cloud Promotion Center for Public sector (CPCP) on April 5 at the National Information Society Agency (NIA) located in Daegu City.

The purpose of the CPCP, which forms a part of the so-called cloud-first policy of the South Korean government, is to assist in the introduction of cloud computing in the South Korean central government and its public institutions and allow them to be free from the hassle of maintaining various hardware and software resources on their computing systems.

At the same time, the CPCP is expected to contribute to the business of domestic cloud computing firms by expanding the demands for cloud computing in the public sector while promoting the sharing of information and data among the government arms.

At present, the cloud computing industry is showing a rapid growth mainly in developed countries, and global leaders such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft and Google are engaged in a fierce competition. South Korean cloud computing firms, which have failed to join the race due to their smaller size, are expected to benefit from the CPCP and the government’s policy for the expansion of cloud computing in the domestic public sector.
