Telecommunications operator SK Telecom plans to achieve a tangible achievement in new projects, including energy and future car sectors, by the end of the year.

SK Telecom has opened the SK Telecom-KEPCO Collaboration Center in the Energy Valley in Naju, South Jeolla, on Apr. 5 to develop technologies and services in three sectors – smart grid system, future-oriented intelligent car and infrastructure for electric cars. In particular, the two companies will push into the global market together based on their collaborated technologies and services.

For future-oriented cars, they will develop the vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communication technology. It will help drivers to deal with unexpected situation in advance by exchanging information about traffic, weather and highway conditions with a broader transportation infrastructure and other cars. Also, SK Telecom and KEPCO will develop an electric vehicle wireless charging technology and the charging-payment connected system. The two will develop services that provides information about locations, rates and types of charger of electric vehicle wireless charging stations and suggests recommended routes to get to the selected station through SKT’s navigation service called T-Map.

In the smart grid system sector, they will set up the Internet of Things (IoT)-only network in the Energy Valley in Aug. first and develop related services. Making use of the IoT network, SK Telecom and KEPCO will also verify the performance of the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI).

Previously, the two parties signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in Jan. to collaborate on projects related to new energy. In March, they jointly introduced an electric car equipped with new information communication technologies at the International Electric Vehicle Expo on Jeju Island.
