Leading information and communication technology companies, such as SK Telecom, Samsung Electronics, and the city of Daegu that plans to make some areas regulation-free, will create an Internet of Things (IoT) model city in Daegu in order to support “Big Jump” of venture firms.

When the city of Daegu sets up the cutting-edge IoT infrastructure and is designated as an IoT regulation-free zone, venture companies will be able to develop new technologies and release products and services, which will lead the global market, without regulations in Daegu.

According to SK Group, Daegu Mayor Kwon Young-jin, Lee Hyung-hee, head of the network operations division at SK Telecom, Samsung Electronics President Kim Young-ki, Kim Sun-il, head of Daegu Center for Creative Economy Innovation Center, announced the implantation strategy to build the IoT test bed in Daegu at the Daegu Government Complex on March 28. They took the first step to establish an IoT model city. As private conglomerates, like SK and Samsung, Daegu-based companies and the city government will join hands to create the venture ecosystem, it will help vitalize both the regional economy and the national economy.

SK Telecom will provide telecommunications infrastructure and technologies and IoT solutions, including energy efficiency, cloud platforms, and big data analytics tools, with Samsung offering network hardware devices. The Daegu Metropolitan Government will also offer administrative support for the project.

In particular, SK Telecom plans to establish an IoT-only network test bed first and expand it to all over Daegu by May. Based on this, it will build an open lab where venture firms and startups can develop new services and allow them to use the ThingPlug, an IoT platform, more easily.

SK Telecom plans to invest 90 billion won (US$77.19 million) be the end of this year to set up the test bed. The city of Daegu also plans to secure more than 1 trillion won (US$857.63 million) from government budgets in the future to establish the IoT-based infrastructure for energy, medical care, and future vehicle.

Samsung Electronics will supply IoT-only network equipment and support the technology development by making public its IoT-related intellectual property. In addition, it will help startups in Daegu Creative Economy Innovation Center to develop and commercialize new ideas and business models so that the sagging regional economy can pick up.

Accordingly, infrastructure which can develop and test new future businesses, such as new IoT-based technologies, healthcare and medical services, future electric vehicle infrastructure, energy efficiency projects and new renewable energy projects, will be established in the IoT test bed in Daegu.
