Seoul Semiconductor announced on March 27 that it has won a patent infringement lawsuit for LED backlight lens technology against Japan-based lens maker Enplas.

Earlier, Enplas had sued Seoul Semiconductor in the U.S. federal court in California, the United States in October 2013, claiming that the latter’s patents were invalid and consequently its products did not infringe the Korean LED maker’s patents of LED backlight lens and backlight system.

Seoul Semiconductor filed a counter-suit in the US court in April, 2014 saying that Enplas was making a serious infringement of its patents on purpose.

On March 24, 2016, a California federal court ruled that Enplas violated the rights of Seoul Semiconductor’s patents willfully. The jury reached a unanimous verdict that Seoul Semiconductor’s LED backlight lens patents are valid, rejecting Enplas’ arguments.

Seoul Semiconductor explains that up to US$12 million, which triples the amount (US$4.07 million) deliberated by the jury, could be awarded for damages related to the patent infringements by Enplas.
