Change of Sourcing

NTT DoCoMo, the largest mobile carrier in Japan, has changed its flagship handset from Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy phone to Apple’s iPhone.

Japanese news outlets reported on September 6 that NTT DoCoMo will release iPhones from this autumn. According to the reports, NTT DoCoMo and Apple have reached an agreement about a sales quota and are talking over specific contract terms now.

It seems that Samsung Electronics will have some difficulties down the road in the Japanese market with the telecoms operator having decided to exclude Samsung from its list of product suppliers for this winter. The two companies formed an alliance as AU (KDDI) and SoftBank, two of the three leading mobile carriers in Japan, supplied iPhones for a long time, while NTT DoCoMo offered mainly Sony’s and Samsung’s handsets after its failed negotiations with Apple. At this time, NTT DoCoMo has decided to bring in Apple’s products as more and more of its customers have been heading for the other two to use iPhones at a very inexpensive price.

Apple, on its part, is planning to make an attempt to win back the leading position in the Japanese market through its cooperation with the number one mobile carrier. Apple has been recently overtaken by Samsung Electronics in terms of total sales in the global smart phone market.
