LG Stylus 2 has become the world’s first smartphone that supports the Digital Audio Broadcasting Plus, a next-generation digital broadcasting standard.

On March 14, LG Electronics demonstrated the DAB+ feature of the phone with the International DMB Advancement Group (IDAG) at the Radiodays Europe conference in Paris, France. The product is planned to be released in Australia and the European countries including the Netherlands, Britain, Germany and Norway in April.

The DAB+ is characterized by its compression ratio that is about four times that of the DAB. The former allows 12 to 25 channels to be operated per frequency, which is more than double the capacity of the DAB. In addition, it allows high-quality audio services comparable to CD. The DAB+ uses public frequencies as radio channels do, instead of consuming data for streaming, and thus requires no additional cost.

At present, approximately 500 million people in 40 or so countries across the world are using the DAB.
