Mobile device manufacturers around the world are working on 360-degree cameras as a key item to accelerate the expansion of the virtual reality ecosystem.

Samsung Electronics, which is in partnership with Oculus, unveiled the Gear 360 at this year’s Mobile World Congress in February. Samsung Electronics began to invest in Bublcam, a Canadian camera manufacturer, last year and is currently increasing its investment in related content with Baobab Studio and the like.

In the meantime, LG Electronics is working with Google for the same purpose. At present, LG Electronics’ 360-degree camera is the only product in the market that is compatible with Google’s Street View. Its product allows images captured by the product to be viewed in virtual reality and uploaded onto the Street View.

Intel recently took over Replay Technologies in Israel to enter the market. Industry insiders are seeing this move as Intel’s effort to further refine its RealSense 3D camera. Traditional camera manufacturers such as Nikon and Ricoh also unveiled their 360-degree cameras to jump on the bandwagon. Nikon displayed its 4K UHD 360-degree camera in Las Vegas two months ago and Ricoh exhibited its action camera optimized for virtual reality content at CP+ 2016 in Japan last month.
