A Korean technology will be officially discussed as the radio wire integrated communications network management technology for the 5G. It will help Korea set a foundation to secure the leadership in the 5G international standard.

KT announced on March 13 that the 5G communications network management technology suggested by the company was adopted as drafts for the 5G standard document at the meeting of the 5th IMT-2020 Focus Group under the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a specialized agency that deals with the world’s ICT industry and that discusses official standards of 170 governments.

During the meeting held at the KT R&D Center in Seoul for four days from March 8 to 11, six global leading telecommunications companies, such as Telecom Italia, NTT and Saudi Telecom, 11 equipment manufacturers, including Ericsson and Nokia, four government agencies including Switzerland’s OFCOM (Federal Office of Communications), and experts from four research institutes, including the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute in Korea and Tokyo University, gathered to discuss the development of the 5G international standards with themes of telecommunications network management, structure and virtualization.

KT submitted two standard document drafts related to the network management at the meeting, and they were chosen as the official agenda of the ITU. The drafts will be decided whether to receive an approval at the 13th study group general assembly of the ITU-U in the future. Until now, there were different standards in the wireless and wire sectors.

Accordingly, telecommunication companies have had to establish new networks every time new technology standards are set. However, KT’s network management technology are attracting attention as it is a technology that integrates and manages both wireless and wire networks at the same time, helping companies dramatically reduce costs, according to KT.
