South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), which has the world’s best technology to build liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, will acquire experience that build all ships related to LNG regasification systems by winning an order for a LNG carrier to be converted into a floating storage unit (FSU).

The company announced on Feb. 17 that it has signed a deal with Canadian shipping company Teekay LNG Partners to upgrade a LNG carrier, which was placed an order in Feb. last year, to a LNG-FSU. The LNG-FSU is an upgraded version of the existing LNG carrier by mounting regasification systems to store and supply LNG to the land.

Teekay has recently won a 20-year deal to run the LNG the import terminal in Bahrain, which will supply up to 22.65 million cubic meters of LNG a day from 2018. In a bid to move LNG imported from other countries by ship to storage tanks on land, LNG FSUs are necessary. Considering the time to start the project in the facility, the two companies have agreed to advance the delivery date.

Until now, Teekay has awarded DSME orders to build various vessels, including natural gas-fueled LNG carriers and icebreaking LNG carriers, and to introduce LNG-FSUs this time.

In 2005, DSME successfully built and delivered the world's first LNG-Regasification Vessel (RV). The company has also won the deal to build the world’s largest LNG-Floating Storage Re-gasification Unit (FSRU) with a capacity of 263,000 cubic meters in 2013, which is under construction. With the latest contract, the company has pushed into the LNG-FSU market, allowing it to build all ships related to LNG regasification. The LNG-RV, LNG-FSRU and LNG-FSU vary in terms of specifications according to size and LNG gasification processing degrees.
