Korea’s leading mobile network operator SK Telecom announced on Feb. 11 that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Finnish network equipment firm Nokia to build infrastructure to test fifth-generation networks.

The two companies will build a network that connects the handset to wireless networks and wired infrastructure to test core 5G network technology.

The 5G network is expected to be several hundred times faster than LTE networks with data transfer rate projected to be over 20 gigabits per second. Once 5G is commercialized, consumers will be able to transfer ultra-high data such as holograms and virtual reality that they cannot transfer in the current 4G speed.

The Korean firm and the Finnish company plan to run joint projects to develop technology to make devices and wireless and wired networks compatible with each other this year and to run 5G test services with customers.
