CGV’s ScreenX, the multi-projection system that extends a movie’s images onto theater walls, has made a good start in China, which is rapidly emerging as the largest film market in the world.

CGV, the largest cinema chain in Korea, said ScreenX is highly likely to thrive in the Chinese market as the ScreenX version of “Mojin: The Lost Legend” has been very popular after it was first released in China at the end of last year.

The science-fiction thriller, which stars Chen Kun, Shu Qi and Angelababy, has a ScreenX version of 30 minutes out of 127 minutes of the total running time. On December 18 last year, the ScreenX version of the movie opened at eight cinema chains of Wanda Cinemas, China’s largest movie theater operator, and CGV, including CGV Beijing Indigo.

The Wanda Dalian Jiangqiao Theater showed an explosive response with an average ticket sales rate of 95.2 percent on the Saturday of its opening week. The Wanda Beijing CBD Theater also recorded a larger-than-expected showing with an average ticket sales rate of 82.7 percent in its first weekend. The Wanda Beijing CBD Theater had an average ticket sales rate of 64 percent until the second weekend of the opening. The figure was up 9 percent point from 55 percent of the overall average ticket sales rate.

The audiences also showed an enthusiastic response. When the movie images extended to three theater walls in the middle of it, they exclaimed. With a great story and unique immersion with three walls, the ScreenX version received good reviews from the audiences.

The ScreenX version of “Mojin: The Lost Legend” is also more likely to put up a good show in the United States. It is set to open at the AMC Theater in Las Vegas, NV, on Feb. 5. Las Vegas is a city that hosts the world’s largest annual gathering for the cinema industry “CinemaCon” convention. At the event last year, ScreenX made a successful debut in the global market.

Ahn Koo-chul, head of the ScreenX business division at CGV, said, “A special theater with new technologies is already a worldwide trend in the cinema industry. We will bring a new sensation in the global film market by actively investing in expanding ScreenX theaters and developing contents this year.”
