Hyundai Motor announced on Jan. 17 that its management and labor of the fifth Ulsan plant have agreed to double the production of the Genesis G90, sold in South Korea as the EQ900, starting from Jan. 18. The G90, the first model under the Genesis brand, now has 13,000 units of back orders after it was first released in Dec. last year. As the G90 for the North American regions will be manufactured in the first half of this year, there will be a growing shortage of supply.

Currently, customers, who have ordered the G90, should wait for up to 10 months until they are delivered the vehicle. Accordingly, management and labor have decided to double the annual production capacity of the model from the current 16,000 to 32,000 units. With the agreement, Hyundai Motor expects that the customer satisfaction levels will improve as the waiting time will be greatly shorted.

Since management and labor of Hyundai Motor have rapidly reached an agreement on the adjustment of output between plants and production rates of car models, the production flexibility of domestic plants has remarkably improved.

According to auto industry sources on Jan. 16, U.S. Consumer Reports magazine named Hyundai's Genesis G90 as the "Most Ambitious" among the top nine models selected at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show. The G90 is the highest-end premium sedan of the Genesis brand.

The magazine noted, “Hyundai Motor is no longer content to sell its Genesis (DH) and Equus sedans under the Hyundai flag and created Genesis as a standalone luxury division with its own identity. It came away impressed with the first offering sampled, the G90.”
