4DX Theaters

CJ 4DPLEX, a subsidiary of South Korea's largest entertainment conglomerate, CGV, announced on Jan. 12 that it has recently signed a partnership agreement with Portugal’s No.1 theater operator NOS Cinemas.

Under the deal, the two companies will install a 4DX movie screen in Almada Forum theater in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, and another one in GaiaShopping theater in Porto, the second largest city in Portugal, within the first half of this year.

NOS Cinemas CEO Luis Roboredo Mota said, “We are very happy to provide a revolutionary cinematic experience to Portuguese viewers through the partnership. As the nation’s leading theater operator, we are confident of the success of 4DX theaters in Portugal with our business expertise and experience.”

In China, the CGV affiliate has also partnered up with Shanghai Film Corporation (SFC), the ninth largest theater operator in the nation, and BONA Cinemas, the 11th largest theater operator, to expand its 4DX theater chain. SFC is the state-run entertainment company in Shanghai and East China, which produces and distributes films and operates theaters. Currently, the company runs 252 movie screens in 39 cinemas in China. BONA Cinemas owns 247 movie screens in 30 theaters, mainly in the nation’s big cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an and Tianjin, and it is recently seeking an aggressive expansion.

Accordingly, CGV’s 4DX theater chain has secured a bridgehead to expand to Shanghai and East China and expanded its business areas to Xiamen in Fujian Province of Southeast China. In particular, the company has also established the strategic partnership with BONA Cinemas to create and distribute its various local content in 4DX.
