Samsung Electronics Co. is announcing the Samsung Portable Solid State Drive (SSD) T3, a 3rd-generation V-NAND-based external SSD that offers high performance and mass storage capacity.

The company announced on Jan. 5 that it will start selling the T3 in 50 countries around the world, beginning in Korea, followed by the United States, China and Germany, after the product was showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2016, the world’s largest consumer electronics show, in Las Vegas on Jan. 6.

Samsung said it will start selling its T3-branded SSD products beginning in Korea, followed by the United States, China and countries in Europe, after the product was showcased at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2016.

The T3, the successor to Samsung’s first portable SSD T1 released in January last year, is an external drive with improved speed and data-storage stability compared with conventional hard disk drives (HDDs).

The T3 will be available in 250 GB, 500 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB sizes. Since it offers sequential read and write speeds of up to 450 MB/s, which is up to four times faster than HDDs, it can process 4K ultra high-definition (UHD) video data.

In particular, the premium 2 TB model supports users who want to store 400 full HD movies, improving consumer product convenience. The 2 TB model is ideal for not only professionals such as designers and photographers, but also users who want to store massive data safely.

Samsung's Portable SSD T3 features a body that's encased in silver and gray aluminum with a premium design. It is about the same size as an average business card and weighs 50 grams.

With a shock-resistant frame, the drive can survive up to 1500 Gs of force and will remain functional even after a drop of up to two meters. It comes with a Thermal Guard, which prevents overheating, so users can safely use the product even in extreme temperatures. The drive is also equipped with advanced encryption standard (AES) 256-bit hardware encryption for the high level of security and protection.

Featuring an adopted USB 3.1 Type C connection, the T3 has improved the convenience of those who use the latest IT devices. It is compatible with a wide range of USB supported devices, including the latest smartphones, tablets and smart TVs.

Kim Un-soo, senior vice president of brand product marketing and the memory business at Samsung Electronics, said, “As the T3 will greatly expand the portable SSD application areas into not only PCs but also smartphones and TVs this year, it is expected to expand the high-capacity SSD market further.”
