It has been found that Korean automakers underwent a decrease in global sales in the first half of 2015 due to the global economic recession but succeeded in showing some recovery in the second half thanks to their major markets including the United States and Korea.

According to industry sources, the five Korean automakers sold a total of 9,011,240 vehicles last year, recording a growth of approximately 0.7 percent from a year ago. Specifically, the combined sales volume had been 8,946,585 in 2014.

Hyundai Motor Company’s sales volume totaled 4,964,837 in 2015, up 0.02 percent from a year earlier. Kia Motors increased its volume by 0.3 percent to 3,050,908, too.

GM Korea, meanwhile, showed a negative growth of 1.4 percent by selling 621,872 vehicles. Renault Samsung Motors boosted its volume by 34.9 percent to 229,082, led mainly by an increase in the export of the Nissan Rogue. Ssangyong Motors succeeded in attaining a 3.3 percent growth, raising its sales volume to 144,541.

The five companies’ domestic sales increased by 8.7 percent year on year to 1,579,706 while their exports declined by 0.8 percent to 7,431,534. The Hyundai Avante was the best-selling Korean car of last year, whose sales volume reached 811,759 worldwide.
