Frequent Recalls

Renault Samsung Motors recorded the largest number of recalls among Korean automakers last year. Its non-Korean counterpart was BMW.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure & Transport announced on Dec. 31 that 958,296 cars classified into 401 models were subject to recall in Korea last year. A total of 757,542 (30 models) of them were Korean cars, while the rest were imported ones.

By automaker, Renault Samsung Motors was subject to 399,177 cases of recall, followed by GM Korea (219,869), Kia Motors (60,286) and Hyundai Motor Company (56,779). When the 20,949 cars imported by Renault Samsung in May and subject to recall are taken into consideration, Renault Samsung’s number goes up to 420,126, equivalent to 43.8 percent of the total.

Among non-Korean automakers, BMW Korea posted 66,641 cases of recalls to top the list. Airbag module defects were reported in January last year with regard to the 13 models including the 320i. In May, the rear reflectors of some models were found to fall short of safety standards. In the meantime, vehicles of Volkswagen Korea, which has had to recall about 125,000 cars because of the diesel regulations scandal, were taken out of the calculation this time.
