SK Telecom will strengthen its collaboration with the world’s leading mobile communication chip maker, Qualcomm, in the comprehensive research and development of fifth-generation (5G) network techs, including the development of a 5G device prototype.

The company said that it held a strategy meeting at the SKT headquarters in Euljiro, Seoul, on Dec. 18, attended by SKT Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Choi Jin-sung and Qualcomm Executive Vice President and CTO Matt Grob.

At the meeting, the two CTOs agreed to cooperate in R&D to provide the world’s first 5G trial services.

The two companies have decided to focus on developing the 5G device prototype first. The development of 5G devices with high performance and low energy consumption has been considered essential for the new network services because of sizable multimedia content for augmented and virtual reality services. The two companies said they will decide on which frequencies they will use for their 5G network and jointly develop a 5G device prototype compatible with the network. Before the full-fledged development, the 5G device prototype will be produced by realizing core functions in a bid to verify the 5G network compatibility and communication performance.

The two companies will also collaborate to develop key 5G element technologies such as gigabit-class data transmissions and super-low latency wireless connections, and to set the global standardization of 5G technologies.
