Local Internet Industry Challenges

The Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) announced on Dec. 13 that the three trends of intelligent technology, industrial convergence and inter-service connection are likely to become more conspicuous next year in the domestic Internet industry.

The organization also picked 10 major issues in this regard, including the popularization of intelligent home electronics and smart home services, fintech in wide use in the financial sector as a whole, connected cars evolving into business hubs, online-to-offline (O2O) connections taking concrete shape as a service platform and virtual reality providing a new opportunity in the Internet industry.

According to the KISA, hot issues in the field of information protection for next year include an increase in the importance of public cloud computing security, privacy threats posed by drones, hacking into major social infrastructure facilities, escalating international tensions surrounding cyber security and ransomware spreading via mobiles.

“Creative destruction and innovation based on the Internet are accelerating these days across all fields of society,” said Baek Ki-seung, chairman of the KISA, adding, “Under the circumstances, the minimization of security threats will be a key element for the growth and survival of countries and enterprises around the world.”
