Hyundai Motor said on Dec. 7 that it has decided to name its eco-friendly vehicle “Ioniq”, which will be launched next year to lead an era of mobility in the future.

The name succeeded the plug-in hybrid concept of “i-oniq”, which was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2012. It embodies characteristics of “Ion”, which releases energy through binding and separating and “uniqueness”, which represents Hyundai Motor’s originality.

The Ionic is the first car to use Hyundai Motor’s environmentally-friendly platform. HYundai will release all three powertrain models - hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and electric vehicle (EV) for the first time. It will launch the hybrid model first in January of next year. With its own platform for the Ionic, Hyundai Motor is planning to realize the aeromechanical design, which minimizes air resistance, and uses lightweight aluminum and advanced high strength steel.

Starting with the domestic market, the company will release the HEV Ionic in the markets of North America and Europe within next year. The EV and PHEV models will hit the market in succession.

An official from Hyundai Motor said, “The Ionic is the result of our effort to secure the lead in the global green car market and a concrete result of our pledge to improve fuel efficiency of 22 models by 25 percent by 2020.”
