National Standard

The Korean Agency for Technology & Standards of the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy announced on Dec. 3 that it will work on about 40 standards in the field of production and detailed design, and internationalize relevant techniques so as to enhance the competitiveness of domestic offshore plant technology.

Korean shipbuilders signed agreements in Houston on Oct. 13 with ordering parties such as Chevron, engineering companies such as Technip, DNV-GL, etc. In addition, 10 standardization plans developed by the agency and three Korean shipbuilders are slated to be shown to American and Singaporean parties this month and in January next year.

The standardization process is expected to lead to reduced equipment purchase costs and shorter engineering-to-building process period, which, in turn, would result in a cost reduction of at least 20 billion won(US$17 million) for every overseas project.

At the same time, the agency released the National Plan for Standardization in Shipbuilding and Offshore Plant Sectors, which covers technological standardization for the sector and assistance for market penetration through developed techniques.
