Cable Contract in US

LS Cable & System (LS C&S), the world's top-tier cable manufacturer, announced on Dec. 1 that it has won a US$57 million (66 billion won) contract with an American energy company in New Jersey. Under the deal with Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G), LS C&S will supply and install 345-kilovolt underground power transmission cables. The company said it expects the cables to be used for resolving electricity shortages at major airports and train stations in the northeastern part of New Jersey.

The 345-kilovolt power cable is a high-capacity and high value-added product that can transmit three to four times more electricity than the 138-kilovolt power cable, which have often been used in the U.S. market. After exporting the 345-kilovolt product to the U.S. in 2006 for the first time, LS C&S currently holds the largest share in the 345-kilovolt power cable market in the U.S.

Most remarkably, the company will manufacture, transport and install the cables which will cross the Newark Bay. Generally, companies produce 500-meter underground cables and connect them with joints on construction sites due to convenience in manufacturing, transportation and installment. However, LS C&S will manufacture, transport and install 2.2 km of cables in the Newark Bay.

In order to do this, a company needs technical skills and expertise in all areas from manufacturing, transportation, and installment to electrical grid construction. Therefore, only LS C&S and a few cable producers in Europe and Japan were granted licenses for bidding. So far, LS C&S is the only company in the country to produce 2.2 km long underground cables.
