During the Samsung Electronics 2015 Investors Forum at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Singapore on Nov. 16, Samsung Electronics announced that it will commercialize a biosensor processor in the first quarter of next year and roll out related products. For the system semiconductor business, which is considered the new growth engine in the semiconductor sector, the company revealed its strategy to concentrate on mobile systems-on-chips, imaging sensors and biosensors.

Hong Kyu-sik, vice president of Samsung Electronics’ system large-scale integration (LSI) business division, gave a lecture on the topic of “Innovation for Next-generation Mobile Experience,” and said, “We will commercialize biosensors in the first quarter of next year.” A biosensor is a device that measures heart rate and blood pressure, and links such information to other devices, including smartphones.

Samsung Electronics’ system LSI business division recently completed the development of bioprocessors (BP) that can monitor electrocardiograms. When making use of BPs, users can monitor their health conditions by checking an electrocardiogram sensor. In addition, it can be used as information to identify individuals, just like fingerprints, since everybody has different heart rate signals.

In regard to biosensors, Hong added, “Although the final product hasn’t come out yet, it will be released in the form of a smart watch. We will develop devices that can recognize even people’s feelings.”

Previously, Samsung Electronics unveiled SleepSense, an Internet of Things (IoT) product that track their sleep, movements and sleep patterns, and delivers personalized expert tips for sleep improvement at the IFA 2015 trade show in Berlin, Germany, in September.
