Cholesterol Reduction

The National Cancer Center announced on Nov. 16 that a research team led by Drs. Kim Jeong-seon and Cho Yeong-ae of its Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Cancer Prevention Research proved that probiotics makes an improvement to blood lipid metabolism.

Probiotics is a germ that enhances health inside human bodies and commonly called “lactic acid.” The research team analyzed theses based on 30 comparative studies on probiotics’ effects on blood lipid metabolism.

It was found that a group that took probiotics recorded their cholesterol density and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol density, which were 7.8 mg/dL and 7.3 mg/dL lower than a control group, respectively.

The higher the cholesterol density of research subjects rose, the longer they took probiotics. Also, the more they took specific probiotics strains, the more notable the efficacy of the probiotics. But whether or not to take probiotics hardly affected either the density of blood high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol or that of triglycerides.

“Current different results of research on blood lipid metabolism made it difficult for us to arrive at a clear conclusion. Analysis of related papers enabled us to come to a more objective conclusion on the efficacy of probiotics,” said Dr. Kim Jeong-soen, the head of the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Cancer Prevention Research.

“In order to actively improve blood lipids, one should make efforts to change habits such as doing exercises or using diet cures,” Dr. Kim added. The research results were published in the October edition of Medicine, an internationally renowned academic journal.
