Robot Choice

The Korean government and Korean enterprises need to focus on the development of service robots in order to prepare for the future of the robotics industry.

The robotics industry is roughly divided into the industrial and service robot segments. The former is on a rapid growth as of late, showing an annual average growth of 60 percent between 2005 and 2011. In contrast, the service robot segment is in a fledgling state now, with companies around the world examining its marketability.

When it comes to industrial robots, Korean companies do not lag behind global leaders in the United States, Japan and Europe. According to market research firm Spire Research and Consulting, Korea is second only to China, the U.S. and Japan in the industrial robot sector.

However, the growth of the service robot sector is predicted to become much faster than that of the industrial robot segment in the near future, as the development of artificial intelligence is accelerating. Still, Korea’s service robotics technology has a far way to go until it will be able to take the place of people’s works in various fields of service.

“The number of companies specialized in the development of service robots is zero in Korea as of now,” an industry insider explained, adding, “The Korean government would be well advised to provide more support so that more companies can be committed to the development of such robots and take the lead in the emerging sector.”
