In the global TV display panel market this year, Samsung Display, LG Display and Taiwan’s Innolux have been competing to be the leader.

According to a market research firm IHS and industry sources on Nov. 1, LG Display posted 42.06 million units in accumulative sales until the third quarter this year, being ranked first with a 20.6 percent share in the global TV panel market. As Samsung Display and Innolux sold 39.99 million units and 39.06 million units, respectively, they came in second and third with a slim margin of 19.6 percent and 19.1 percent. The accumulative shipments of the three companies in the third quarter reached 121.112 million units, accounting for 59.3 percent of the entire market.

In the third quarter alone, Samsung Display shipped 14.33 million units, while LG Display and Innolux shipped 13.6 million units and 12.19 million units, respectively. Accordingly, the company took first place in terms of quarterly shipments three quarters after it did in the fourth quarter last year. Samsung Display beat Innolux, which ranked second until the first half of this year, and is hot on the trail of LG Display.

Currently, LG Display is gaining the upper hand to become the leader in the TV panel market this year in terms of the combined sales until the fourth quarter. In this case, the company will win back the top spot in the market after it was displaced by Samsung Display last year. In the global TV panel market last year, Samsung Display ranked first with sales of 56.25 million units, followed by LG Display with 52.54 million units, and Innolux with 50.29 million units.

In the UHD TV panel market, which has entered the stage of popularization this year, Samsung Display and LG Display are competing to become the leader. Samsung Display came in first with accumulative shipments of 8.64 million units in the third quarter this year, surpassing more than doubled the total shipments of 3.92 million units last year. This was largely due to high sales of the SUHD TVs, which was released earlier this year, in the global market. LG Display came in second with accumulative shipments of 7.36 million units in the third quarter, beating Innolux with 4.74 million units. Although the company shows a big gap between Samsung Display in the UHD TV panel shipments until the third quarter at 1.3 million units, there are still variables to turn the game around.
