No Money for Phones

On Oct. 29, the IT& Mobile Division of Samsung Electronics announced that it recorded 26.61 trillion won in sales and 2.4 trillion won in operating profits in the third quarter. The former increased from a quarter ago but the latter slightly fell with the prices of the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge adjusted and the sales volume of low-end smartphones on the rise. The overall sales volume increased by approximately 18% from the previous quarter’s 89 million units or so.

The Mobile Communication Division of LG Electronics posted 3.3774 trillion won in sales revenue and 77.6 billion won in operating losses. It was affected by sales volume decline in the domestic and emerging markets, foreign exchange rate factors and intense market competition resulting in a drop in selling price.

On the contrary, Apple’s sales revenue and its net profit each jumped by no less than 22% and 31% year on year while the iPhone sales volume gained 36%.

Huawei’s smartphone shipments skyrocketed by 63% from a year ago to 27.4 million units in the third quarter. According to market research firm GfK, Huawei took up 9.5% of the global smartphone market to rank third in the world between January and August this year and recorded a share of 15.2% in the Chinese market as the top player in China as of the end of September.
