Samsung Electro-Mechanics filed a patent application with the Korea Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) for Force Touch, which is virtually the same as 3D Touch used in the iPhone 6S. This technology offers different types of functions based on the strength of a push on the screen.

According to the patent information retrieval system of KIPO on Oct. 20, Samsung Electro-Mechanics filed a patent named “touch input equipment and electronics device with touch input” with KIPO on April 9, 2014. Considering that the Korean company supplies core components for Samsung Electronics’ smartphones, the patent is likely to be used in the Galaxy S7.

The keyboard is constantly evolving in the mobile era. The great advantage of Force Touch is that it is possible to utilize space very effectively by setting different levels of voltage, which devices recognize according to the strength of the touch.

A spokesperson for Samsung Electro-Mechanics explained, “This patent is about touch input equipment and touch input-based electronic devices, where a single key can provide different pre-set images in accordance with the strength of touch.”

Apple, Huawei, and ZTE are known to have already used or will use Force Touch in their smartphones, according to overseas news organizations. If Samsung Electronics joins the trend, Force Touch is likely to be firmly entrenched as a new user interface for smartphones.
