Card Carrying

SK Holdings C&C has decided to bolster its smart card business by customer service on Sept. 23 in a bid to target the global Internet of Things (IoT) market.

The company revealed various smart card products on Sept. 22, such as a machine-to-machine (M2M) universal subscriber identity module (USIM), which connects machines, devices and appliances, and smart cards for wearable devices, as well as near field communication (NFC) ZigBee USIM, a basic product for IoT service implementation.

It is also developing smart cards, which reinforce security and authentication functions, in order to target the rapidly growing smart home appliances market.

The SK holding company started the smart card business in 2010 and supplied a total of 22.35 million USIM cards to telecommunication service providers at home and abroad as of the end of last year.

This year, the company has also supplied about 2.3 million USIM cards to U.S. mobile carriers and Internet service providers such as Atlantic Tele-Network (ATN), Limitless Mobile, JAB Broadband, Beam Speed, and Singapore’s largest mobile carrier Sing Tel, as well as domestic mobile carriers and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs).

A ZigBee USIM card is the combination of NFC technology Zigbee with a previous USM card. The transmission range of ZigBee is 45 meters, and it can be expanded to an area of a soccer field, more than 7,000 square meters, when increasing signal strengths with an additional ZigBee transceiver. Therefore, it is considered the optimal choice for the development of smart IoT services.
