Potential Penetration

Xiaomi Technology, which is weighing its penetration into the Korean market, is engaged in a lot of activities behind the scenes. After appointing a law firm in Korea, the Chinese tech giant is sounding out opinions of its entry into the market during its meeting with start-ups in the nation.

According to industry sources on Sept. 13, Xiaomi held an event to introduce MIUI in Seoul on Sept. 11 involving local ICT start-ups.

MIUI is Xiaomi's Android-based operating system, which is available on Google Play in 32 different languages and 156 countries.

At the event, the Chinese electronics company encouraged participants to develop apps based on MIUI. Xiaomi's move can be interpreted to mean that it is mindful of consumers in Korea, and that it is part of its strategy to enter the Korean market. Since an increasing number of Korean consumers are using Xiaomi phones through direct purchases in overseas websites, Xiaomi’s first foray into the Korean smartphone market is expected to play no small part in the related industry.

The Chinese company is changing its attitude of showing no interest in establishing any connection here with the headquarters in China. Xiaomi recently appointed a law firm in the nation. So far, it hasn't set up an office or placed personnel in Korea. In contrast, other Chinese manufacturers have their own subsidiaries, like Huawei Korea or ZTE Korea. The appointed law firm is in charge of copyright issues in the country involving Xiaomi products.
