SK Planet Commerce Division head Lee Joon-shik (right) and director Choi Yeong-hoon (left) at the Information Planning Division of Seoul City sign an agreement for the development of IT-based urban public services on Aug. 31.

The city government of Seoul and SK Planet are working together to incorporate the Internet of Things (IoT) and big data into urban public services. The purpose of the cooperation is to accelerate the development of urban public services in Seoul in the fields of security, welfare, tourism, environmental preservation, and many more.

To this end, SK Planet’s services will soon be offered to the Bukchon Tour program of Seoul City. Also, SK Planet is going to share its beacon infrastructure with the city so that new IoT business models can be created and startups and developers can make use of them. A beacon can be defined as a telecommunications device that provides various services and information by means of the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology and smart phone-based data transmission covering a distance of up to 50 m.

The city and the company are also planning to share the former’s public transit data and meteorological data and the latter’s T Map traffic information service and Weather Planet service with each other in order to launch collaborative big data projects. Technical training at SK Planet’s T Academy offices are scheduled to be provided for those taking part in such projects, too.
