KT is joining hands with China Mobile, the largest mobile carrier in China, to develop mobile Internet of Things (IoT) technology and come up with IoT-related business ideas to expand the market.

KT has announced on Aug. 31 that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with China Mobile IoT (CMIoT) in Chongqing, China. As an IoT-releated research and development subsidiary, the CMIoT was established by China Mobile in Chongqing in 2010 to develop China’s standard platform and devices.

With the MOU, the two companies will jointly develop IoT devices and solutions, help IoT developers in Korea and China advance into overseas markets, and establish KT-CMIoT IoT-related working-level cooperation channels.

Cooperating with the CMIoT, KT expects to see considerable effects in the industrial IoT sector, which needs a successful integration between terminal, solution, and platform technologies like a connected car.

Also, KT will be equipped with the CMIoT’s communication chips and modules at the GiGA IoT business cooperation center, and allow members of the olleh GiGA IoT Alliance, which is led by KT, and the Gyeonggi Center for Creative Economy & Innovation (CCEI) to proceed with China Mobile’s test to certify the communication environment. It is also expected to help many domestic companies enter the Chinese market in the future.

The olleh GiGA IoT Alliance is the nation’s largest IoT partnership, which helps its members come up with IoT-related business ideas, commercialize them, and hopefully tap into overseas markets. It is participated in by 100 information and communications technology (ICT) firms at home and abroad, such as Samsung Electronics and Nokia.
